Photo Contest Official Rules

General Contest Information
Whether you are a Washington resident or a treasured visitor to our great city, the Washington Tourism Development Authority invites you to zoom in and submit your images to our photo contest. We are seeking photos that illustrate the lifestyle, beauty and assets of Washington, NC.

Contest categories are listed below:

Nature and Outdoors: Scenic shots of Washington’s parks, waterways and wildlife from any time of year.

Adventure & Recreation: Action shots of people of all ages participating in outdoor activities: kayaking, playing, biking, hiking, fishing, boating, camping, bird watching, etc.

Pets & Their People: Photos must show one or more people, one or more pets, or a combination of people and pets enjoying Washington.

Culinary Delights: Send us photos of your family and friends enjoying incredible Washington cuisine. Photos can be taken in Washington restaurants, strolling while noshing in our downtown or on our boardwalk, or picnicking. Send photos from local farmers & seafood markets, cooking events, classes, cocktails from local restaurants etc. Show us how you most love to enjoy Washington deliciousness!

Who May Enter
The contest is open to any photographer over 18 year old. If you are under the age of 18, then your parent or legal guardian must enter on your behalf.

All photos must be taken in Washington, NC.

Washington Tourism Development Authority employees, their immediate family members, and people living in their households are ineligible.

How to Enter
Entry via contest website:


Photos will be accepted from January 7, 2020 at 10am EST to February 28, 2020 at 5pm EST.

By submitting a photo, you promise that your entry complies with the Official Rules.

You may submit up to 10 photos. Each photo must be in digital format and have a caption. All photos must be submitted as high-resolution JPEG files. Each photo must be at least 5×7 (or 1500×2100) at 300 dpi or larger. If you submit any photo under this resolution standard, then the photo may be ineligible.

Photos must be taken by the entrant and be the property of the entrant.

Photos must comply with all applicable laws.

Photos that are obscene, defamatory, sexually explicit, or inappropriate will be disqualified at our discretion.

Photos must have been taken within two years of entry into this contest.

Photos may not have been published previously for monetary payment.

Only minor editing of a photo is acceptable. Extensively edited photos will be ineligible. Borders, frames, text or other graphic treatments are not permitted.

Prizes Per Category:

  • 1st place: $250 and their winning photo displayed on the Washington Tourism web site, social media accounts, Tourism e-newsletter and possibly in visitors guide.
  • 2nd place: $100 and the opportunity to have their winning photo displayed on the Washington Tourism web site, social media accounts, Tourism e-newsletter and possibly in the visitors guide.

We will email or call winners by March 6, 2020. If you don’t provide a valid email address and telephone number, your entry may be disqualified. To receive prizes, winners must complete additional forms within 30 days. If winners don’t claim their prize or complete the required forms, we may select an alternate winner or not award the prize.

Prizes may not be transferred.


Our judges, at their sole discretion, will make 1st and 2nd place selections based on the quality, composition content, originality, creativity and mass appeal.

Decisions are final.

Only winners will be notified of the outcome. A list of the winners will be posted at visitwashingtonnc.com.

Other Very Important Information:
All entrants grant to the Washington Tourism Board Authority the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, distribute, display, modify, and create derivative works of any photo entered in the contest in any current or future media or on any merchandise.

Entries become our property and will not be returned.

We may terminate or modify any part of the contest at any time for any reason.

We may disqualify anyone who violates these Official Rules.

All entrants agree to release and hold harmless Washington Tourism Development Authority from all claims related to this contest.
