Summer is nearly here, and there's no better way to experience Washington and Beaufort County than by exploring the great outdoors. This month's Small Business Spotlight highlights Liane Harsh, owner of Inner Banks Outfitters, located at 1050 E. Main Street in Washington, NC.
Before moving to Washington, Liane Harsh grew up in Ohio and later lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she taught high school physical education and managed a magnet program.
In 2006, while visiting friends Laura Scoble and Cathy Bell, owners of Backwater Jack's Tiki Bar & Grill, who had also relocated from South Florida. Liane was introduced to the Washington community. Around that time, the owners of Backwater Jack's had purchased the building next door and offered it to Liane if she was interested in developing a business of her own. That opportunity would eventually help lay the foundation for what became Inner Banks Outfitters.
Wanting to venture into business ownership, Liane followed her friends to Washington, resigned from her job in Florida, and later that year opened Inner Banks Outfitters. Liane jokingly describes herself as a "Half Back" -- a term often used for Northerners who relocate to Florida, only to find the climate a bit too hot and humid before settling halfway back in North Carolina. For Liane, Washington proved to be the perfect fit, offering a welcoming community, a slower pace of life, and easy access to the outdoor recreation she loves.

What advice would you give someone who wants to try kayaking, paddleboarding, or cycling for the first time?
Local bike, kayak, and paddleboard outfitters are some of the best resources for beginners. They offer more than just equipment--they provide valuable knowledge about the area, recommended routes, and tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable experience. Being able to ask questions and learn from people with firsthand experience can make all the difference. Small businesses also take pride in the products and services they offer and are committed to helping customers get the most out of their outdoor adventures.
For kayaking and paddleboarding, I recommend renting from an outfitter that can provide a brief introduction or lesson on proper paddling technique. Look for a place that offers stable kayaks and paddleboards designed for beginners. Most importantly, always wear a personal flotation device (PFD).
Cycling is a little different. The key is finding a bike that matches the type of riding you want to do, whether that's casual cruising or trail riding. Local bike shops are excellent for this because you can speak with knowledgeable professionals about your options and get properly fitted to a bike. Once you head out, always wear a helmet!
What do you love most about Washington?
It's hard not to fall in love with Washington when you're surrounded by the breathtaking views of the Pamlico River. The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, cycling, boating, fishing, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of Eastern North Carolina.
Beyond the incredible outdoor recreation, what else I love about Washington is its people.
What are some of your favorite hidden gems or outdoor spots to explore around Washington, NC?
Runyon Creek, right next to my shop, is one of my favorite hidden gems in Washington. While kayaking the creek may only be about a mile long, it offers a surprisingly immersive wilderness experience just minutes from downtown.
When I'm out riding my bike, I love heading to Dinah's Landing in Goose Creek State Park. The ride along Harvey Road features a fun S-curve that's always enjoyable to cruise through. About halfway to Dinah's Landing, there's a great spot to stop and rest while taking in some of the best views of the Pamlico River.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business?
Buckle up... it's a great experience, but owning a small business comes with constant challenges.
One key to success is knowing your strengths as a business owner and focusing on them. Equally important is recognizing when something isn't working and being willing to adapt. My business model has evolved many times since I opened in 2005, and that flexibility has been essential.
Most importantly, be kind and welcoming to your neighbors and customers. The relationships you build and the way you treat people will have the most lasting impact on your business over the long haul.
